Proverbs 31.18-19
“She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle.”
Proverbs 22.29
“Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men.”
It is a pleasure to watch a man or woman who is good at what they do. It is inspiring to observe people working skillfully. It is motivating to see someone making steady progress toward a worthy goal. It is a delight to watch people overcome obstacles and conquer a difficult task. Watching a craftsman build something is a joy. It thrills the soul to observe an artisan create something of beauty.
This is because God is a Creator and Builder, and so is man who is made in God’s image.
In Proverbs 22:29, God asks an interesting question and follows it up with an important observation, “Do you see a man who is skilled in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before obscure men.”
The question and comment seem to imply that people with that level of skill are uncommon. They are rare. Indeed, many people are not exceptional in their skill; instead, many are stuck on the mountain of average.
This verse states that a diligent, skilled worker will not work for common, unappreciative men. Rather, they will work for people of importance and influence, even kings. Joseph, Daniel, Nehemiah, Esther, and others are good examples of this proverb. Each of them was given opportunity to stand before kings, to serve in high places because of their skill and diligence and faithfulness.
The godly woman in Proverbs 31 and the skillful men in Proverbs 22 provide us with a powerful example of commitment to building competence in your chosen craft. The Christian community should be known for skillful work. We should have the reputation of people who display exceptional character and competence.
The remainder of the 21st century will be a time of unparalleled change. It will be a demanding work environment that requires disciplined, skillful work. It will also be a time of challenge and opportunity for Christians in the marketplace and in society, demanding new levels of maturity, strength, and wisdom both personally and professionally. We must be prepared.
Trust God and do the work.
