Psalm 96.4, 7-9
“For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods … Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength! Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering, and come into his courts! Worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness; tremble before him, all the earth!”
As this Psalm says, God deserves to be praised. He is worthy of our worship. This is a theme in scripture.
“Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.” (Psalm 145.3)
“I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.” (2 Samuel 22.4)
“Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.” (Revelation 4.11)
When David was anointed king of Israel, he brought the ark of the covenant to Jerusalem and had it placed in the tabernacle. On that day David offered a song of thanks to the Lord.
“Sing to the Lord, all the earth! Tell of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples! For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and he is to be feared above all gods.” (1 Chronicles 16.22-25)
In these and other verses the bible tells us that the Lord is worthy to receive honor, glory, and praise. The apostle John was given a powerful vision of worship, which he shares with us in the book of Revelation:
“Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!’” (Revelation 5.11-12)
Again, God deserves to be praised. He is worthy of our worship. This is a central theme in scripture, and may it also be a central theme in our lives.
