Ephesians 1:19-21
“… and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come.”
Paul prays for the Lord to give us understanding of God’s power. He writes not only of God’s ‘power’ but of “the energy of the might of his strength,” which is a literal translation of that section in verse 19. In that one verse Paul uses four different Greek synonyms to emphasize the greatness of God’s power.
- First is dunamis (power), from which we get the English words “dynamite” and “dynamo.”
- Second is energeia (working), from which we get the word “energy.” It is the energizing force of the Spirit that empowers believers to live for the Lord.
- Third is kratos (might), which means “strength, power, or mighty deed.”
- Fourth is ischus (strength), which carries the idea of endowed power or ability.
What an amazing verse of scripture!! In all four ways the Holy Spirit empowers “those who believe.” The Lord has redeemed us through Christ, and he has also given us his power for living the life to which he calls us.
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1.7)
“His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence.” (2 Peter 1.3)
“He is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us.” (Ephesians 3.20)
Trust God, and walk in the power that he has given to you.
