1 Kings 19:1
“Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.”
I want to make sure we don’t lose sight of the central warning from the life of Ahab: Beware of idolatry. Beware of worshiping counterfeit gods. This was the very reason why God raised up Elijah and sent him to confront king Ahab.
King Ahab provides a dire warning because of the tenacious grip that idolatry had on his life. Ahab had access to the Law of Moses. He knew what scripture taught about worshiping idols. Ahab had seen first-hand the presence and power of the true God.
Elijah had prophesied in the name of the Lord, and the prophesy came to pass. Elijah had prayed for fire from heaven in the name of the Lord, and fire came from heaven. Elijah had even killed the prophets of Baal in the name of the Lord. Ahab saw all of it.
Yet in the face of all of that, his heart was stubborn and he remained addicted to his idols.
As I mentioned earlier, it would appear that on the chariot ride from Mt Carmel to Jezreel, rather than repenting of the evil he had done, Ahab grew resentful about the trouble that Elijah had caused. When he arrived in Jezreel, Ahab complained to Jezebel about Elijah’s killing of the prophets.
No remorse. No repentance. Such is the seductive power of idolatry in the heart of a person. Such is the danger of counterfeit gods.
“Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them.” (Jonah 2.8)
The Lord is calling. Coram Deo.
