On-path

By Tim Kight on November 30, 2020

Ephesians 5.15-16
“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.”

Life in focus is on-path. It is a life directed by discernment and discipline. Wise people carefully consider the way they go about life. They “look carefully” at what they do and how they do it.

On-path versus off-path is a recurring theme throughout the bible. Chapter 14 of the book of Proverbs speaks to the need for discipline and discernment in order to live an on-path life. The contrast is crystal clear: Wise people have discernment; foolish people do not.

“The wisdom of the prudent is to discern his way, but the folly of fools is deceiving.” (Proverbs 14.8)

“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.” (Proverbs 14.12)

“The simple believes everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps.”  (Proverbs 14.15)

“One who is wise is cautious and turns away from evil, but a fool is reckless and careless.” (Proverbs 14.16)

Having discernment means being self aware (see yourself clearly), and being situationally aware (see events and situations clearly). Foolish people lack awareness of both self and situations. Their discernment is seriously impaired. They do not see themselves clearly, nor do they see situations clearly.

Causes of the lack of discernment:

> High trust in self, low trust in God.
> Directed by feelings.
> Failure to invest the time to think.
> Acting on impulse.
> Adopting what is popular. Conforming to social pressure.
> No spiritual or mental discipline.

Consequences of the lack of discernment:

> Self-deception.
> Blind to the reality of what’s going on around you.
> Blind to the reality of what’s going on within you.
> Gullible and vulnerable to being manipulated and exploited.
> Reckless and careless.

These consequences are devastating. Proverbs warns that foolish people pay the ultimate price for their lack of discernment: “It’s end is the way to death.”

The Lord’s wisdom gives you the discipline to stay on-path, as well as the discernment to recognize and reject the deceitful people and distorted ideas that want to take you off-path. Be watchful every day about the path you are following.
