Proverbs 31.14
“She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar.”
The message here that this godly woman is resourceful. She understands how commerce works, and she engages in productive trade with merchants to make sure she acquires what is needed for her family. The next two verses expand on her resourcefulness:
“She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens. She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.” (Proverbs 31.15-16)
The attributes of the virtuous woman are not meant to be an example just for women and wives. Rather, they are characteristics that every Christian — man or woman, married or single — should build into their life.
Here is how I would summarize the characteristics that she displays
- She is righteous. She fears God and obeys his standards. She honors the Lord first, and her husband and family second.
- She is reliable. She is a trustworthy steward of her home. Her husband and her family have the utmost confidence and trust in her.
- She is responsible. Her diligence and work ethic is evident for everyone to see, which is why she is trusted and respected. Verse 27 says, “She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.”
- She is resourceful. She uses all of the tools and resources available to take care of her family and ensure their welfare. Her resourcefulness is not limited to classic “domestic” activities, but extends to a wide range or opportunities. Verse 18 says, “She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night.”
- She is rare. There are not many women like her. She is unique and uncommon, like a rare jewel. “An excellent wife who can find?” it says in verse 10. “She is far more precious than jewels.”
Imagine the impact the Christian community would have if we consistently displayed these attributes to a watching world!
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5.14-16)
