Proverbs 25.1-3
“These also are proverbs of Solomon which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied … It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out. As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth, so the heart of kings is unsearchable.”
The Lord’s knowledge is infinite. He is omniscient, and has no need of counselors or advice. He reveals those things that he wants us to know and obey, and many other things he chooses not to reveal.
“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.” (Deuteronomy 29.29)
A wise leader, on the other hand, must gather the relevant facts, consult with wise counselors, consider consequences, and deliberate carefully before making a decision and choosing a course of action. It is a foolish leader who jumps to a conclusion.
But the discipline to think, study, and “search things out” isn’t only for leaders. It should be something everyone does. Every person — especially Christians — should be disciplined and diligent in their thinking. If you don’t invest the time to search things out, you put yourself and your plans at risk. You make yourself vulnerable to the lies of the world.
“The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.” (Proverbs 21.15)
“Desire without knowledge is not good, and whoever makes haste with his feet misses his way.” (Proverbs 19.2)
Don’t be a lazy thinker. Don’t be naive. Don’t be gullible. Do the work and search things out.
